Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) has recognized their contributions to Competitive Intelligence by awarding them each its highest award: the Meritorious Award. The Helicon Group is the only competitive intelligence firm with two Meritorious Award winners as members.
Carolyn M. Vella
Ms. Vella is the founder of The Helicon Group. In 2003, Carolyn was the recipient of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professional’s (SCIP) Meritorious Award. This award is given annually to one individual who has made significant and meritorious contributions to the CI profession. It is the highest award SCIP can bestow. Carolyn is also co-founder of SCIP’s Women’s Leadership Council.
Carolyn has written numerous articles on business and competitive intelligence topics. She is co-author of ten books on competitive intelligence including Competitive Intelligence Rescue: Getting It Right, Bottom Line Competitive Intelligence, Improved Business Planning Using Competitive Intelligence, and The Internet Age of Competitive Intelligence.
Carolyn has previously served as a member of the National Advisory Panels to VOLUNTEER, The National Center For Citizen Involvement. She is a former member of the Boards of Directors of the American Cat Fanciers Association and of the Cat Writers’ Association.
John J. McGonagle
Mr. McGonagle is co-author of ten books on competitive intelligence including Competitive Intelligence Rescue: Getting It Right, A Manager’s Guide to Competitive Intelligence, and Protecting Your Firm Against Competitive Intelligence. He is the research editor of the Arthur Andersen European Community Sourcebook.
John received the Meritorious Award in 2007 from the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals. John helped design SCIP’s Team Excellence Award. He was formerly chair of the Association for Strategic Planning’s John Goodman Award Committee for innovation in strategic planning and was a judge of business books for Dan Poynter’s Global eBook Awards. He is also a member of the International Association For Intelligence Education’s Intelligence Training Standards Sub-Committee
John has served as an expert witness on competitive intelligence. He is now a member of the faculty of the Institute for Competitive Intelligence and has previously been an adjunct lecturer at Lehigh University and Allentown College, as well as an Assistant Professor in the College of Business at Kutztown University. John served with the US President’s Private Sector Survey on Cost Control (the Grace Commission). He holds a B.A. from Yale College, a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, an LL.M. from the George Washington University, and an M.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
